About

This digital exhibit covers the wide range of items that Special Collections & College Archives at Musselman Library on Gettysburg College campus has to offer. Please note that the items in this collection are not the only ones in the collection. There are hundreds of Civil War Artifacts in the collection that cover all parts of the war, the items selected were ones that related towards a soldier’s experience during the war and paired nicely with the Hoadly Hosford Collection.

About the Curator of the Site:

Steven Semmel is a graduate from the Gettysburg College Class of 2016. He is a History and Computer Science double Major and a Civil War Era Studies and Public History double Minor. He is currently enrolled in the Public History program at West Virginia University as a graduate student.  His experience with the Hoadly Hosford collection drove him to create a map that followed the movements of the 44th New York during the war and translate the three diaries in the collection. After being exposed to the majority of the Civil War collections, he decided to expand the original digital exhibit idea to create a larger soldier’s life exhibit.

From the Curator:

“I hope you all enjoy the site as much as I did to create it. It is one of my favorite subjects in the Civil War to study and its an extremely portion of history to study. The majority of us have some connection to the Civil War and I hope this collection can you understand what your ancestor(s) might have experienced.” – Steven Semmel ’16
