A Levittown, PA native, Capt. Daniel W. Whipps was a brother and President of the Theta Chi fraternity and a cadet in the Air Force ROTC during his time at Gettysburg. Whipps graduated from Gettysburg in 1969 with a degree in Business Administration and was honored as a Distinguished Air Force ROTC Graduate. He married Susan E. Bloomer, a Gettysburg College Class of 1970 graduate. Prior to his death, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters. He was killed in a plane crash in Northeastern Spain in 1972 along with fellow Gettysburg alumnus Capt. Robert L. Morris '66. Whipps was interred at Gettysburg National Cemetery.
